FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about this web site.

1. What is University of the Net?
University of the Net is an on-line training site. We provide both the teaching and administrative tools necessary to comply with governmental regulations and professional standards of practice.

2. What can University of the Net do for me?
For students: We provide accredited courses necessary to meet government mandated continuing education requirements.

For administrators: We provide the management tools necessary to monitor and personalize training for large groups of employees.

3. How does on-line teaching work?
For mastery type courses, we determine a student's current level of knowledge about a particular objective. If the student has already mastered that material, no further instruction is required on that topic. However, if they are deficient in all or part of a particular objective, a course of instruction will be dynamically generated that will address those weaknesses. Immediate remediation is offered in the training environment to give students instantaneous feedback.

4. How do I get credit?
When a student finishes a course, they will be sent credentials documenting their completion.

5. Can I stop and start the training when I choose?
Yes. Instructional materials range from short tutorials that can be finished in 5-10 minutes to full 30 hour core courses. Student responses and performance data are constantly updated in the University databases. Consequently, a student may pause after any activity and return to it at a later time.

Note: The material sent to students will time out after 20 minutes. Each individual activity must be completed within 20 minutes.

6. How long do I have to finish a course?
Courses will state up front what the expected completion time is. In most circumstances you will have as much time as you want.

7. What if it is too hard?
Students will always have the option to review presentation material as many times as necessary. And although some testing modes (Pretest, for instance) can only be taken once, a student will usually have unlimited opportunities to pass a test. However, all scores will be recorded.

8. What information do I need before I get started?
For students: If you are taking a continuing education course for credit, you will need your professional license number and/or social security number. If a training administrator from your company has already signed you up to take courses, then you may have to get your User Name and Password from your administrator.

For administrators: If you are enrolling a large number of individuals, you will need all of their personal information required for registration. If this is a substantial population (e.g., more than 100 students) you may wish to contact University of the Net about a direct electronic transfer of student data for registration.

9. What sort of hardware/software is required?
When selecting possible courses to take, a list of hardware and software requirements will be listed. Free sample pages will be offered to determine if a student currently has the necessary software and hardware. Typically this involves access to version 4 or later of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. There may be additional requirements for soundcards, speakers, Macromedia's Flash, etc. All of these requirements will be noted BEFORE the student or administrator signs up for a particular course of instruction.

10. How do I get started?
To purchase courses, take training or to administer a training program, it is necessary for the student/administrator to register and login. Registration only has to be completed once, but all individuals will login each time they return to the site and want access to their personal information.

After logging in, students may purchase courses, start or continue courses, or review personal information. Administrators, after logging in, may set up and personalize training for their students, review performance information, and print out or export data.

11. When can I take courses?
You may access your training material at any time, around the clock. The only time restrictions are related to deadlines imposed by regulatory agencies on their licensees or by individual corporations on their employees. University of the Net has substantial resources devoted to infrastructure and technical support that in the past have provided high bandwidth and uninterrupted access more than 99.99% of the time.

12. What does an Administrator do?
An administrator supervises the training for a group of people. This individual selects courses for students and can personalize the training to meet specific needs. For instance, some students may need only familiarity with a certain topic while others need to demonstrate mastery of particular objectives. The administrator also view reports on student progress and is able to statistically compare large groups of individuals to spot problem areas where additional instruction may be required. Finally, the administrator is able to print reports, certificates and export data into company databases.
